Domzale
Domzale is a flourishing town of 11,000 people in North-Central Slovenia. It’s location in the foothills of the Kamnik Alps and astride the Kamniška Bistrica River, coupled with its prosperity and history makes it a quant and picturesque destination.
History
The area around this town has a long history, beginning with the archaeological find of the remains of an Ice Age hunter’s dwelling.
In classical times, the Illyrians and Celts lived there, until the Romans came and the area became a crossroads.
In the Middle Ages, the local lord, Adam Ravbar, played a noted role in defeating the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Sisak in 1593.
Krumperk Castle
That same Adam Ravbar lived in Krumperk Castle, which still stands today. The castle was built in the 13th Century. While it is not open to visitors, the exterior is still in good condition, and the grounds are home to the Krumperk Equestrian Club.
Horseback enthusiasts who have always dreamed of a ride around a castle should look into taking advantage of this opportunity.
Straw Hats
In the 19th Century, the town made the transition from handicrafts to industrialism based upon its traditional local product: straw hats. The straw hat continues to remain a noted local cultural item.
Cultural Events
The main attraction of Domzale is its regular cultural events, especially its chamber music and lively traditional performances.
Groblje Church, located just outside of town, is the site for chamber music concerts featuring both Slovene and international musicians. The concert series hosted by this Church are attracting justified international repute.
There is also the Studenec Summer Theatre, as well as the Modern Art Gallery.
Sports
Domzale is home to both its own soccer and basketball club. By the way, basketball was a popular sport in the former Yugoslavia, with the country being a regular basketball contender at the Olympics.
