Planica -

Slovenia Skiing in the Jump Valley

Planica is known as heart of worldwide skiing. Read here what makes this place that extraordinary.

Development of Carving Skis

Even before 300 years Slovenian people in winter used to move by planks underneath their shoes. Later the Carving Ski was developed here. So no wonder that the first "Greater-Jump" was erected in Slovenia too. Since then Planica is the heart of worldwide ski-jumping.

Jumping Stars with 200 m and more

In 1930 the first jump was built, but already in 1934 a greater one was erected. In 1936 the first leap of more than 100m was done by the Austrian Sepp Bradl. But without saying the contest continuously went on and his width of 101,5 metres is nearly long-forgotten, as meanwhile the jumping stars do 200m and more without any problems.

Home of World Records

Due to the fast moving and development in 1969 the brothers Lado und Janez Gorišek built a new jump - the Letalnica, as it is called. The old one could not be extended and so the new flight-jump was erected besides it. Jump Valley was born and the spot got known as International Centre of Ski-jumping.

And still the elite of ski jumping and -flying annually meets in Planica to compete against each other. A lot of records were born and made the place a "Home of World Records".

Skiing Spots nearby

As ski-jumping is not the sport category skiing fans normally use to practise themselves, Kranjska Gora (7km from here) has to be mentioned. This idyllic ski spot around the lovely mountain village at 810 m and the hillsides of Vitranc (1215m) is the most important and most popular in Slovenia. You will find all you may desire in skiing and après-ski - an absolutely extraordinary area.
