Algeria vs Slovenia -

Football World Cup 2010 Match

Learn in the following what's so special about the football game
Algeria vs Slovenia

Slovenia dropped jaws among football fans worldwide when it won a June 2010 World Cup match for the first time since its independence in 1991. This unexpected and very welcome victory 1:0 was against Algeria. It created a stir not only in the tiny nation of Slovenia but also among football fans everywhere.

Slovenia and Algeria both entered the historic match with victories against teams supposedly rated superior to them. Slovenia is a tiny nation with a population of only 2 million; this earthshaking FIFA win is an inspiring victory.

Algeria vs Slovenia:
Algerian Goalkeeper Assures the Win for Slovenia

Algerian goalkeeper Farouzi Chaouchi fumbled in exactly the same style that England goal keeper Rob Greene made famous less than 24 hours before. Farouzi let a not particularly difficult goal slip past in the final 11 minutes of the game, handing the game to Slovenia.

Robert Koren, the Slovenia team captain and former West Brom midfielder, let loose a not too devious shot and Farouzi Chaouchi let it slide past grazing it with fingertips and a shoulder, producing a startling win for Slovenia fans.

Slovenia Tops the Fledgling Table

This historic match in Polokwane, South Africa put the dark horse Slovenia team at the top of the fledgling table and ready to give the big names trouble in the playoffs to come.

Slovenia faced the USA on June 18 2010 at 16:00 and reached a 2-2 draw. On June 23, 2010, Slovenia faces England in the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth at 16:00.

There are high hopes in Slovenia, and plenty of speculation about who will top this unexpected face off.

About the Slovenia Team

The Slovenia team played their first match in 1992 but until 2010 have had a spotty showing despite strong fan support. The team wears white socks, white jerseys and white shorts when playing.

Slovenia Team Goal Keeper

The Slovenia team goalkeepers are Samir Handanovic, Jasmin Handanovic and Aleksander Seliga. Udinese’s Samir Handanovic is the most well known of the three standing 6’5” tall and making what seem impossible saves just when the other team is sure of making a goal.

Slovenia Team Defense

The Slovenia team has a strong defense even though none is big name players in other leagues. Bostjan Cesar, Bojan Jokic and Miso Brecko lead the defense with support from Marko Suler, Matej Mavric, Branko Ilic, Elvedin Dzinic and Suad Filekovic.

Slovenia Team Midfield

The team captain Robert Koren plays in the wing like Aleksander Radosavljevic. Central midfield has Andraz Kirm and Andrej Komac, with Rene Khrin and Dalibor Stevanovic to fill it out.

Slovenia Team Forward

Milivoje Novakovic Valter Birsa, Zlatko Dedic, Zlatan Ljubijankic, Najc Pecnik and Groningen’s Tim Matavz round out the midfield.

Slovenia Victories

Slovenia surprised everyone by qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2000 beating Ukraine. Their next major success came in 2002 when they qualified for the 2002 World Cup.

Slovenia’s victory over Russia a playoff secured them a place in the 2010 FIFA World Cup games.

Slovenia might be a tiny nation but they seem to pack a punch and pull out some amazing victories when others have written them off as non-contenders.
