Bled Slovenia -
with the oldest castle
Bled Slovenia has many attractions. One of it is the old castle.
Picture if you will a towering 130-meter cliff overlooking a beautiful lake and you have the setting for Slovenia’s oldest castle.
This is one of the most visited attractions in Slovenia, second only to the Postojna Cave. If you are looking for an interesting vacation this could be just the spot for you.
The Oldest Castle in Slovenia
The first mention of this castle in any historical document was in about 1011. It was during this time that the German Emperor Henry II donated the castle and land to the Bishop of Brixon.
It is believed that at this time little more than a tower and protective wall were all that stood there, due to styling that puts the other towers around the high middle ages.
Furthermore, the entrance is a curving arch and drawbridge definitely from the Gothic era.
What is so Special About this Castle?
The age and beauty of this picturesque castle make it a number one stop on the itinerary of many travelers. The architecture of the castle is a remarkable sight; so many different periods are carved into the design of this castle that it is easy to see why it is such a popular attraction.
Add to that the beautiful views of Lake Bled and the Julian Alps in the distance and you have a killer combination. Perhaps as exciting are the summer months that see middle age plays, dances, archery tournaments, and sword fighting. A step back in time just does not seem to do it justice.
Castle Museum
Along with being the oldest castle in Slovenia, the entire castle is a museum. As you go through the castle, you can experience the rich history and development of the castle. Each area is decorated with period pieces to give you an excellent look at leisure life in each era.
From an exhibition near the chapel, that shows the oldest excavated part of the castle to the large collection of armor and weapons, some dating back to the 16th century you can truly walk through many phases of history.
Other Attractions in Bled Slovenia
Surprisingly the top attraction in the area is Bled Island, this little island sets in the middle of Bled Lake and is steeped in beauty and lore. Legend says that a temple used to stand on the island dedicated to Ziva, the Slavic goddess of love. The place of worship no longer stands but possibly in its place is the expertly reconstructed church of Mary of the Assumption.
great national treasures
Around the island graves have been found with remains that date back to the 9th century, and the buildings in the area were probably the work of Pavlin the Patriarch. Much like Bled Castle this tiny island has seen her share of influences over the centuries. Gothic belfry and Romanesque architecture are but just a couple of the reasons to see both these great national treasures.
