Churches in Slovenia

The Churches in Slovenia testify the artistic and architectural features of the land and the past life of its people. Wherever your eye wanders in Slovenia, whether in the center of a city or on top of a hill, it catches sight of a bell tower...

Transit influenced slovenian religiosness

churches in slovenia Bordering to Austria, Hungary, Italy Slovenia was "transit" country since medieval times. Routes for commerce, lots of martial conflicts and invasions of barbarians. The impacts can be imagined. And all this also influenced importantly the religiousness of the Slovenian population.

high church varieties

Slovenia churches meant shelter to the souls, a place of solace and identity. They bear witness of spiritual guidance, besides ecclesiastic infighting for power and influence. The variety is formed by different historic times, the Romans, the Middle Ages, gothic as wells as later on baroque era. As a result you find in Slovenia Neo-Romanesque churches but also Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches. That's not all. You can find here even pre-Romanesque chapels and antique Early Christian basilicas.

heritage of art period preserved in churches

Slovenia churches testify centuries-old multifaceted architectural culture and handicraft. They are testimonials of high levelled stone cutting, painting, forging, carving.

Typical in Slovenia: Solitary Churches

Solitary churches on top of a hill are a typical feature of Slovenia. Experts explain this fact to the high refuges of the earliest inhabitants and pre-Christian religious groups.

Some Church Highlights

Some Slovenia churches were part of richer neighbouring country dioceses. That was help in preservation. So today nearly every ancient town in Slovenia can present a minimum of 1,2,3 …. really interesting churches. Only a few to mention here:

The Cathedral St. Nicholas (Ljubljana), rooted in 13th century as Romanic, often burnt and rebuilt, since 1707 baroque.

In Ljubljana too, the Ursuline Church with an exceptional wavelike façade.

Pilgrimage Churches in Slovenia

For numerous pilgrimage churches the Basilica Mary of Help in Brezje has to be noted as "must visit".

The pilgrimage churches on on Sveta Gora above Nova Gorica and on Ptujska Gora near Ptuj are also very interesting.

Also the parish church St. Mary (14th century) in Turnišče near Murska Sobota with its frescoes and painted outer walls is worth mentioning. As well as St. Michael in Črna vas, an example of ecclesiastical architecture by the famous Jože Plečnik.

Gothic Church Highlights

Nearly untouched medieval Gothic feature is shown by the twin churches Sveti Volbenk and Sveta Ana in Leše above Prevalje.

Or the Holy Ghost Church (Sveti Duh) in Slovenj Gradec.
