Ivancna Gorica

– where the White Monks settled

The community Ivancna Gorica is a further typical example for places in Slovenia where beautiful nature at same time is presenting important historic footsteps.

Cisterian Monastery Stična:
Home of white monks

Half way between Ljubljana and Novo Mesto the community, existing of 11 small towns is situated at the bottom of a valley surrounded by acres, meadows and woods.

Besides numerous Celtic cairns and remains of the Romans, the most interesting sightseeing object is the Cisterian Monastery Stična. A convent, giving home to the white monks (rooted in Switzerland since the beginning of the 12th century and well known due to their exercise of the vow of silence) for long time.

romantic landscapes

The romantic and pleasuring landscapes of Slovenia as also given in Ivancna Gorica, were often described, as well as touristy and sportive offers, - and so the monastery as a major sightseeing attraction, is. But nevertheless it is worthy of a detailed view and some words.

built under Michael from France

Stična was built under lead of "cementarius" Michael from France during 1132 and 1136 and a legend tells, that a bird showed the place by singing. The white monks came to Ivancna Gorica in 1136, staying here until an interim closure of the convent in 1784. In 1898 they came back.

Center of Religion, Culture and Trade.

From the beginning the Cisterian convent was a center of religion, culture and trade. The monastery bibliotheca kept precious illuminated handwritings and in 1428 the so called Stična handwritings were done, an important part of Slovenian literature and eldest evidence of Slovenian language, today presented in the National resp. University Bibliotheca.

nice souvenir: medicinal herbs

You will find a museum of Slovenian religion history, and lots of paintings and articles of virtue. A little shop offers convent made products, especially medicinal herbs, well known by the name of the famous padre Simon Ašic.
