Izola - Slovenia
The fishing town Izola has its name from the Italian word for island. It is located in the region Primorska at the adriatic coast and is always a trip worth due to its colourful historical heritage. Me and my family went there in earlier times to buy cheap fish in cans...But also the fish restaurants are always a treat!
A former island
The old part of the town is on a former island and this is why it is called like that. Later the citizens built a bridge to the mainland and in 1253 it became an own town with an own regime.
In the 18th century the city belonged to the republik of Venetia, since 1797 to the monarchie of Habsburg, in 1918 to Italy, in 1947 to Triest, in 1954 to the former republic of Yugoslavia and today to Slovenia.
Rich cultural heritage
Izola is full of evidences of its history; starting from Roman finds, the wonderful venetian Besenghi-palast, that was built in 1775, the thermal bath of Saint Peter built in 1824, up to the brigde that was made out of the dropped down city walls to make it stronger in 19th century.
Don't miss the excellent fish
Today the most important industries for the about 14.500 citizens here are tourism and fishing. The town has got a port for ships up to 30m long and 4,5 m deep. So the town invites not just with many places of cultural and historical interests, with the wonderful adriatic coast and a warm and sunny weather, but also with an excellent and traditional fishfood.
