Alpine Environment & Medieval Charm
This old medieval town is situated only 23 km from Ljubljana and in immediate vicinity of undulating green hills, woods, valleys and the impressive Kamnik Alps - alpine environment at best.
It was mentioned in 1229 for the first time. Though the ancient city wall was pulled off long ago the town centre and the network of narrow streets from 16th century is well preserved, still presenting the typical houses made of trimmed stones, arcade courts and gothic portals. Architectural nuggets, worth seeing.
eldest Romanic historical buildings of Slovenia
The town is guarded by two castles (both built around 1202): Stari grad, a ruin on top of a steep hill, and Mali grad just in the town centre with some chapels besides, which are the most important and eldest Romanic historical buildings of Slovenia. Legend tells that a bewitched countess named Veronica, half woman half snake, once protected a treasure near the castle.
Many Cultural Treasures
Today you may find cultural treasures e.g. in the Franciscan Monastery, built in 1490 and nowadays a museum for exquisite old books and incunabula. Or Castle Zaprice (16th century), after 1850 baroque styled and today as a museum presenting collections of archaeological, historic, art-historic and ethnographical interest.
High Plateau of Velika Planina is nearby
The nearer environment of Kamnik, especially the high plateau of Velika planina is offering pure nature in contrast to the historic diversity in sightseeing. In summer it offers a place for alpine recreations in the middle of a totally romantic, well preserved old herdsmen colony. In winter you'll find a really great place for snow activities of all kind.
