Koper

Find here some general information about Koper (Capodistria) as well as a description of the city's sights, interesting activities and an introductory food guide to the region.

Where is Koper?

It is situated in the Southwestern part of Slovenia on the Adriaticical Coast. The town has the largest and only commercial port in Slovenia and is bilingual, with Slovenian as well as the Italian language. It is also the home of the known University of Primorska. Due to the Mediterranean influence the city's winters are mild while the summers are dry and warm.

Medieval Centre with great historical buildings

Éxplore here a beautiful medieval city centre with little narrow streets, old buildings and historical sites. One of its highlights is the Titov Trg or Tito Square which is the centre of the old town. The Carmine Rotunda church from the 12th century is a former baptistery while the white painted 15th-century Praetorian Palace shows a Venetian Gothic style.

You'll find there also the Cathedral of St Nazarius with a tower from the 14th century. Its interior includes the sarcophagus of St Nazarius himself, beautiful marble decorations and paintings.

Special Tip in summer: Yellow Night!

In summer this town hosts the Yellow Night with large and long lasting fireworks and a great number of open air events for the whole family. The city offers a variety of theatre performances over the whole year. Local handicrafts can also be found throughout the town.

What you shouldn't miss

Typical dishs for this region are Jota which is a soup with pickled cabbage, the popular Polenta (corn porridge) as well as a range of fish specialities. By the way, the region also offers some typical local wines.
