Kranj Slovenia

Kranj Slovenia is the administrative, trading, financial, educational, cultural, and sports center of the entire alpine region.

It is said that Slovenia is the birthplace of skiing, and this sport is especially wondrous to take part in around the city of Kranj.

fourth largest city of slovenia

The fourth largest city in Slovenia, Kranj stretches out in splendor at the confluence of the Kokra and Sava rivers. Just to the north of the city is the hinterland of the Karavanke mountain range which includes among its members the famous Storžič mountain, while to the south of Kranj are found the fertile Sorško polje fields.

Carniola

Inhabited as early as Illyrian period going back 10 centuries before Christ, Kranj became a city state in the 6th or 7th century CE with the coming of Slavic settlers, only to lose its independence a few hundred years later to the monarch of Carniola, which is when it got the name that it is known by still to this day.

An architectual beauty

The beauty of the city is created not just by its geography but also by its architecture and layout. Late period Gothic town houses, Renaissance manors, richly designed and ornamented churches and homes with elaborate frontages, façades, and halls, and lovely curving streets define Kranj.

This architectural beauty is exemplified by Khislstein Castle, first mentioned in writing from the year 1256 CE.

Traditional Events

A schedule of traditional events that take place annually in Kranj Slovenia keep the city electrified:

  • The greatest Slovene poet, France Prešeren, has a Carnival take place in his name in February.

  • A full Week of the Slovene Drama Theatre takes place in March.

  • Kranj Youth Week is celebrated in May.

  • The Carniola Festival, and the Children’s’ Puppet Festival "Kiselfest", take place throughout June and July.
