Ljublijana Central Market
While visiting Ljublijana, this gem of a city, consider a visit to the Central Market. One of the little pleasures that all real travelers indulge in is visiting the marketplace.
After all, it is one of the most easily found, authentically local experiences for a tourist.
Sidebar: By the way, I know that this is how "Ljubljana" is written correctly. To ensure that as many Slovenia Lovers as possible will find this website I have used on this page mostly the wrong spelling - to catch also those 10 % of visitors who write Slovenia's capital wrongly like that: "Ljublijana".
Designed by Joze Plecnik
The Central Market was designed by Slovene architect Jože Plečnik, and was built between 1940 and 1944, making it an interesting oddity of wartime, pre-Communist construction.
Nearby the Ljubljanica river
Overlooking the Ljubljanica River, it includes a closed and open-air space, and takes maximum advantage of its location with a row of riverfront stalls and large, semi-circular windows.
What is more, the market is situated in the heart of old Ljubljana, surrounded by lovely Baroque buildings and in the shadow of the city’s ancient castle.
Perfect perch for people-watching
Wares for sale include the usual fruits, vegetables, spices of a market of this kind, but also Slovene specialties such as prosciutto and the potica cake. Like markets everywhere, it is a perfect perch for people-watching.
Getting there and hours
Getting to the market is easy, given its central location. If you can find your way to the river and the famous Tromostovje, or Triple Bridge, the Central Market is right next door.
The market is open 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, or 8am to 4pm in the winter. It is closed Sundays.
