Ljubljana Castle
The Ljubljana Castle is maybe the most popular attraction of Ljubljana. Read here why this medieval castle is worth also your visit.

How to get on the castle
You can drive to it by car or walk through the old town and climb up the path and the stairs to the castle. But the most beautiful way to get there - especially when you travel with children - is taking the small white train.
We enjoyed this family trip last year and our 5 year old daughter was more than impressed.
We recommend the tourist train
This beautiful white train on wheels rides between the city centre and Ljubljana Castle. It passes the Triple Bridge and the Stritarjeva ulica, the Poljanska ulica and the Ulica Janeza Pavla II streets.
The train departs from the Prešernov trg square every full hour. It returns from the Castle Hill every hour at 20 minutes past the hour. The ride takes about 15 minutes and is accompanied by a taped guide.
A bit of history
When the Habsburgs took over Ljubljana in 1335 they destroyed the fortress of the Spanheim familiy and started building their own castle. In the beginning it only consisted of walls, towers and wooden barracks.
Its impressive appearence is the result of much reconstruction over the centuries. The Ljubjana Castle was primarily built to defend the town of Turkish invasion. However the peasants rebellions had to be supressed as well.
Hot spots of the castle
The Ljubljana Castle is a complex consisting of the chapel of St. George, the Virtual Museum and the tower.
To visit the tower it is necessary to climb up the long spiral staircase. From the top one experiences a spectacular view over the city.
The chapel of St.George is famous for its beauty and the coats of arms of the past Carniolan governors.
In the Virtual Museum you learn more about the history of Ljubljana. One can see a 3-dimensional documentary about the history of the castle and the city in Slovene, English, German and Italian.
Relax in the courtyard
You will find the courtyard where you can relax without any entrance fee on the other side of Ljubjlana Castle.
Many exhibitions inside parts of the Ljubjlana Castle are also free.
For example the Galerija Rustica, where you will find traditional handicrafts of Slovenian of excellent quality.
Centerplace of Cultural Events
During the summer evenings one can enjoy concerts, theatre perfomances and open air cinema. A special highlight is the mediaval day, which will be organized around the castle and inside the courtyard on the 3rd of September.
