The walled city Maribor

Northeast of Ljubljana
The city is situated on the left bank of the river Drava northeast of Ljubljana. Maribor aquired its city rights before 1254. it was sorrounded by a powerful city wall whose remains are still visible on the banks of the river.
Medieval Squares in the city core
The old city center is charcterized by medieval squares featuring such landmarks as the Rotovz or City Hall, the Slovenian National Theatre and the palatial University of Maribor.
The city originally got its name from the march castle of "Marchburg". It owns numeruous wellpreserved mansions and palatial buildings.
enjoy a bourgeois feeling
This town with its steep pitched teracotta roofs and its coloured baroque facades has a distinctly bourgeois feel. While after World War II Ljubljana attracted migrant workers from other part of Yugoslavia, Maribor remained a stronghold of wealthy old slovenian families who had prospered under the Habsburgs.
Oldest Grapewine in the world!
A famous attraction still flourishes today due to its ressilience: Stara Trta, the ancient wine that has been registred in the Guiness Book of records as the oldest grapewine in the world. A research proved that the wine is more than 400 years old.
