Best mountain biking trails in Slovenia

If you are fan of mountain bike parks and want to visit one of the best trails in Europe, you need look no further than the Karavanke Alps.

At the eastern side of these Alps there is a total area of over 1000 km consisting of numerous different routes to delight and impress mountain bikers as well as other kinds of cyclists and quite a few of the mountains here rise to alpine peaks.

The reason why Slovenia´s first mountain bike park is located in this particular spot is down to the fact that the woodland close by with its complex system of cart tracks and dirt roads offers endless possibilities as far as mountain bikers are concerned. Let's take a closer look at two of the parks in this area.

Črna na Koroškem

Established during the mid 1990´s this was Slovenia´s first mountain bike centre. The village covers seven valleys below the Savinja and Karavanke Alps and crossing from one valley to the next is achievable by the use of some of the mountain passes.

The centre of the park is based at the tourist farm, Koroš in Jamnica where along with accommodation, you will find other biker associated services such as a bike rental business, a repair centre, a cycle shed and a place where you and your bike can dry off whilst waiting for the mini-bus transfer service.

To the north, south and west of this region are the neighbouring cycling networks of the Carinthian biking area of Austria, the Logarska valley and Jezersko, respectively.

For something completely different take a ride in the abandoned mine which runs for 6km under Peca. Here you will experience a mystifying bike ride deep beneath ground level - but don't worry, the way is clearly marked so you won't get lost!

Postojna (Notranjska)

This is another great area for mountain bike parks situated in the south west of Slovenia. It is the most wooded region of the country and appears at first sight to be a completely different world.

Notranjska is an area of high plateaus and the landscape switches from greenery to lakes and then swiftly back to greenery once more. After a while the herds of roe deer you see on a regular basis fit nicely into the atmosphere of lively natured villages which seem to have been practically forgotten over the years.

The majority of the cycling tracks in mountain bike park, Notranjska tend to run on roads and pathways where there is little traffic present. This offers the biker a great chance to take in the natural beauty and sample some local culture en route.

There are ten thematic circle tracks located within an area of five municipalities, namely Cerknica, Postojna, Ilirska Bistrica, Pivka and Loška Dolina and between them they cover over 500km.

The park area itself is over 1.381 km2 and it has 217 settlements with a total of 49.014 dwellers.

Famous for its greenery it is, in fact, one of the largest lived in forest areas of central Europe.

Likewise one of the largest uninhabited forest areas of central Europe can also be found here at Javorniško - Snežnik, so when travelling around these parts its recommended that you take up the services of a professional guide who knows the local terrain well.

Suitability of the Cycling Tracks

The majority of the mountain bike parks and cycling tracks suit the average cycler of all ages and abilities and they are great for those who want to enjoy a peaceful biking experience and take in some of the local sights.

There are, however, some more challenging routes that would be more appropriate for expert riders to bike along. As well as the above mentioned guided tours, there are also MTB training courses on offer too.
