Mountain Bike Trail Options in the Postojna Area
Find here some great mountain bike trail and cycling route options for the beautiful Postojna area including the Nanos Bike route, the bear’s land bike trail, the castle bike route and other mountain bike routes.
1. The Postojna - Nanos Bike RouteThe route from Postojna to Nanos weaves its way through the forests and plateaus and drops back into the valley just ahead of the Suhi vrh (dry peak). Here you can visit the once famous wagon stop village of Razdrto as well as the Hudičevec Tourist Farm.
Why not take a swim, or have a sauna or a massage in the Mirjam Welllness Centre followed by a meal of some of the excellent home cooked cuisine on offer. From here you can take the path over the quarry to the villages of Laže and Slavina, the latter of which used to be the main parish. Here inside the church of St Mary you will find the famous altar retrieved from the Sv. Trojica (St. Trinity).
You can stop for a break at the Prestranek Castle and take refreshments, go for a horse-ride or watch the horse training going on. If you feel up to it you can tackle the highest peak of the Nanos, the Suhi Vrh which reaches 1313m and boasts the best views of the Postojna and the Pivka valley.
This route starts at the Postojna Hotel Sport and is 58km long. It takes around four hours to complete and is graded as medium. The ground covered is a mix of asphalt and tar macadam. 2. The Castles Bike RouteTaking you back to medieval times when battles were regularly fought by the knights for their loved ones, this route meanders through many churched villages and past the Orekeh, Predjama and Prestranek medieval castles.
You will see the Ravbar Tower which is all that remains of the Mali Castle these days and pass along to what's left of the Habsberg , a once powerful castle of the Baroque era.
You can also take in the Planina cave whilst on your bike tour as well as the cave underneath the Predjama castle. Again there are lots of horse-riding opportunities here, or if you prefer you can simply watch the horse training taking place.
As an alternative, the hour long trek on the Sv. Lovrenc hill is equally as exciting as doing a spot of bird watching at one of the most popular locations for this particular pastime, Unška koliševka . This mountain bike trail is one of the ten tracks incorporated within the MTB Park Notranjska. This route is 57.4km in length and takes around four hours to complete. It is graded as demanding so best suited to the more serious bikers amongst us. 3. Bear´s Land Mountain Bike TrailAs the name suggests this mountain bike trail which runs through the huge forest areas of the Javornik and Snežnik mountains, is home to brown bears as well as wolves and lynxes. It's a 2 day route which brings us back to reality and reminds us how small and vulnerable we humans really are when compared to the beauty of nature.
An overnight stop is made at Mašun plateau, and the opportunity to sample delicious food and enjoy a game of bowls is extended to us. Early the next morning we set off for the Sviščaki tourist settlement, and then continue to the fairytale Snežnik castle where visiting the dormouse museum is a must.
To get to the castle you pass through some of the most magnificent scenery in the Notranjska region in particular, the Snežnik mountain. From here the route leads you to the disappearing lake known as Cerknica, and the many water birds can be spotted nesting here along with the brown bears who simply love to eat berries all summer and sleep soundly throughout the winter months. This mountain bike trail is also one of the ten MTB Park Notranjska routes.
The route is 144.7km in length and is graded as demanding.
4. The Cerknica Lake to the Rakov Škocjan Canyon Bike Route By following this route you will see Cerknica Lake the biggest disappearing lake in Slovenia. It is the perfect place to stop to take a dip, go canoeing, horse-riding or take a circular drive in a traditional cart before tasting some superb home-made food provided by any one of the many tourist farms.
It's a great location for fishing and bird-watching enthusiasts as well as those who are into botany. On your return journey to Postojna you can visit the Rakov Škocjan regional park, another natural gallery and by walking around the parks paths you will be able to learn all about everything you see.
If you don't fancy walking, a spot of bathing in the Rak stream followed by a snack on the terrace of one of the local guest houses may be just what you are looking for.
This route last for 48.5km and takes around 5 hours to complete. Once again, it is graded as demanding.
