MTB Mountain Biking in Slovenia

The Mountain Bike Trails of Maribor and Pohorje

Probably best known for its wine and its culture, Maribor city has earned its place on the map as an MTB World Cup venue.

Superb cycling experiences are offered for families, road cyclists and mountain bikers within this area of scenic vineyards sloping down towards the Drava River surrounded by the stunningly green colored Pohorje Hills.

A world class competion host

As a world class cycling competition host, Maribor is, without doubt the hub of cycling as far as Slovenia goes. This along with its known tradition of excellent wine production is what makes it a great starting point for many cycling trips. The way the city diversifies draws visiting tourists all the year round but the best time to take a trip to this part of Slovenia is from spring through to the end of the autumn.

MTB Mountain Biking and Cycling Tours

You can mountain bike or road cycle to your heart's content over the gravelly tracks and through the wine growing hills of this area and it´s ideal for serious bikers, for family trips and for those seeking an adrenalin buzz.

The way marked route of 75km known as the Pohorje Biking Transversal is great for mountain bikers to explore Pohorje and the Bike Park Pohorje is home to the famous downhill world cup event. You can reach the summit of Pohorje by cable car or you could go all out to beat your personal best results by attempting to climb these roads instead.

The climbs begin in Fram, Hoče, Maribor, Oplotnica,Pekre, Polskava, Ruše and Slovenska Bistrica. As alternative options why not take Slovenia's 129km bike trail along the river Drava running through Maribor, the Amber Cycling trail from the Baltic to the Adriatic or yet another trail over the Hills of Slovenske Gorice?

Of course, you also have the opportunity to sample what the area has to offer as far as food and wine go when you have laid your bike down for the day.

MTB Mountain Biking and Cycling Packages

Enjoy the vineyards and explore the city with The Wine Road City Adventure package which gives you accommodation for two on a bed and breakfast basis in a three star hotel and includes bike rental and tourist tax. Prices for this package start at EUR 70 a head based on a booking of two or more people.

The Profile of the Cycling Tour

The total distance covered is over 1000km with individual route lengths being anything from 5 to 75km. There are over 20 tours, ten of which are marked. The lowest point above sea level is 275m whilst the highest is 1400m.

Events held in the area feature the MTB World Cup, the Fruit and Wine Road Marathon and the Pohorje Cycling Marathon during the month of June and August sees the Climb to Trije Kralji take place.
