Nova Gorica Slovenia

Although only established in 1948, Nova Gorica is fast becoming the most exciting city municipality in Western Slovenia. Found right on the Italian border, it has a special Mediterranean climate with much sunshine all year round, even during its appealing winter seasons.

Local residents, as well as tourists, find that Nova Gorica isn’t just your everyday European town, it has much to offer.

Bounty for Nature Lovers

Nova Gorica is indeed a most relaxing haven, with lovely hills dotted beautifully by flower gardens. Up north is the 682 m tall Sveta Gora, or Holy Mountain, on which you can see as far as Istria, Venice and the Julian Alps.

Down south, you can find the more humble Kostanjevica Hill, where you can visit the Church of Our Lady of Annunciation and a monastery older than the town, where the last of the Bourbon family are buried.

For more untouched nature delights, the plateau known as Trnovska Planota can be found 25 km away, where a unique aural experience of birdsong awaits.

It is also highly recommended to have a meal at any of the tourist farms, with its wide array of local food, haute cuisine and fine wine.

A Rich Cultural Heritage

Even if the town is relatively new, the architectural history of Nova Gorica boasts of a rich heritage. Several castles are scattered throughout the region, the most important being Kromberk Castle, which hosts the Gorica museum.

Rihemberk Castle is also a must-visit, especially as it has become an important site for performances, exhibits and other events.

University contributes to the rich culture

Another important castle, the Vogrsko Manor House, also hosts exhibits, conferences, and similar activities, but is also known for its equestrienne events.

The city municipality does not rely merely on its 16th and 17th century heritage sites to provide culture, many contemporary factors are also at work. For example, the University of Nova Gorica also contributes to the rich culture. During the summer, the students club hosts programs at the very heart of town.

Enjoy the choral and musical concerts

Nova Gorica takes pride in the technologically-advanced facilities of its newly built theatre and gallery, which is why many are taken by the its old-town charm in a contemporary setting.

Many choral and musical concerts are held at the different heritage sites around Nova Gorica, usually in the monasteries or the basilica found at the top of Sveta Gora. Concert-goers and mountain climbers usually stay at the inn found on its peak.

For Casino Enthusiasts

The bountiful nature and cultural scene may lead you to believe that Nova Gorica goes to bed early, but the opposite is true. There is an exciting nightlife, as all regions with universities are wont to have. Aside from several discos and clubs, you could also try your luck at the two very famous casinos, the Hit Park and Hit Perla casinos, which make gamblers from Las Vegas feel right at home.

Come to Nova Gorica

You can enter Nova Gorica through trains from Bled and Jesenice, or come from the Italian town of Gorizia, from which Nova Gorica got its name.

The policy of showing passports to travel past the border of the two towns was lifted in December 2007, allowing better access as trains to Venice and Rome are only fifteen minutes from Nova Gorica.
