Piran Slovenia

Piran Slovenia

Piran Slovenia is a picturesque coastal city which lived its history in the wind of several cultures and under many masters.

It is in my opinion one of the most beautiful cities in Slovenia and built of stone with wonderful city mansions, numerous small churches and narrow winding streets leading to attractive Squares.

Get here some tips what you shouldn't miss in this fascinating slovenian coastal town.

You'll fall quick in love...

Take the chance and wander idly through the narrow venetian-gothic alleys as they weave and burrow between antique houses and you’ll fall probably quick in love with this wonderful town.

piran slovenia

Punta light-house

Piran got is name from py (greek for fire) referring to the Punta light-house at the tip of the town’s peninsula. This lighthouse has helped ships reach teh great salt-port at Koper since antiquitiy.

St George’s Church

St George’s Church is dominating Piran whose bell tower from 1609 was modelled on the San Marco Comapanile in Venice.

Beneska Hisa

One of Piran’s most eye-cathcing buildings is the red 15th century Beneska hisa (Venetian house, Tartinijev trg 4) with its stone lion relief and tracery windows.

Many different emperors

The Slavs, the Romans, the German emperors, the Venetians, the Patriarchate of Aquileia and the Hapsburg’s Austrain Empire. All these emperors wanted to subjugate it, that’s why the old city core was completely surrounded by a wall with four gates (6th century).

While the city began to spread beyond ist original wall a new wall was established in tne second half of the 5th century. It was a protection against the dangers of Turkish raids.

Birthplace of Tartini

We invite you also to visit the birthplace of the great composer and violinst Guiseppe Tartini. There you can visit the Tartini Memorail Room in the house he was born in 1692. Numerous events in Piran refelct the spirit of Tartini in this city.

In April concerts and symposia are held in the Tartini house and also the Tartine theatre offers different performances. In August the city celebrates the Tartini festival. Across the city you can hear excellent concerts of classical music and the works of the great virtuoso.

Pans of Secovlje

Not far away from Piran the rich salt pans of Secovlje are situated. Spread between the land and the sea the salt is still produced in the old way today. The rich salt flats cover an area of special cultural, natural, technical and regional value. There you can find unique fauna and flora of the salt flats and salt is produced.

As visior you can try the difficult task of gathering salt and with a boat you will reach the Salt Making museum and some of the old saltmaker’s houses. In April , July and August the Salmakers Festival reminds the people of the wealth and importance.
