Ptuj Castle

Besides the two well known monasteries - a Dominican and Minorite (this one important for the development of vineyard culturing) the Ptuj Castle is the most important sightseeing point to talk about.

Initially built as a military base in the 10th century and following declining, the castle was rebuilt in the early 12th century by the leading archbishop of Salzburg mastering Ptuj at this times. Nowadays this castle is a museum, a most interesting one, presenting besides the architecture itself, several special departments of ancient art of life.
centre of the Mithraism cult
Once the centre of the Mithraism cult, the ruins of five temples were found in Ptuj and partly reconstructed in the museum. Another department presents a comprehensive collection of old music instruments and based on this interest concerts and seminars on antique music as well are held here once and again.
paintings and sculptures originating from Gothic to Baroque
Furthermore the Castle Gallery shows paintings and sculptures originating from Gothic to Baroque. And you will find a selection of old carnival masks too. Ptuj is a fine place in general, the castle here is a Slovenian must visit.
