Skocjan Caves,

enchanting place and UNESCO World Heritage at same time

In South Western Slovenia the Skocjan Caves present an absolutely highlight referring speleology, dripstone caves and the wonderful world of Karst. Read here why we even prefer the Skocjan Caves to the more famous Postojna Caves in Slovenia.

a hidden gem

These Caves here are maybe not that famous than the Postojna caves but we love them even more. Why? Of course not only because you find creations like collapse dolinas, natural bridges, subterranean waterfalls, gorges etc. It's more! It's by far not that touristic than Postojna and in our opinion much more impressive and natural!

And rightly the Skocjan Caves got a status at the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.

You like a little guided tour through the marvellous underground chambers?

Silent Chamber:
The caves formed by river Reka were mentioned already in 1561, about 1800 they were opened the first time for visitors. A man-made 116 m long gallery leads into the first, the so called Silent Chamber showing dripstones of fabulous appearance, accented by illumination in numerous formations, very subtle ones up to thick pillars, covered in silence.

Great Chamber
Passing Paradise with its lot of sinter buildings you arrive a labyrinth of sand settlement and collapsed stones leading into the Great Chamber presenting really great stalagmites (standing dripstones). Following you may admire the fantastic organ pipe like formations in the Organ Chamber and here you will hear some of a rush.

"Roaring Chamber"
Walking on silence is gone, - you reach the Roaring Chamber, the without saying most impressive part of the caves. This chamber is an immense hall of more than 300m length and more than 100m width and height, river Reka rushing and cascading at the bottom.

It is completely unique in Europe and totally overwhelming as an experience. The path leads over the Cervkvenik Bridge, 45m high above the Reka, descending into a deep canyon, into further chambers and halls, into the Great Valley at the end, where Reka runs aboveground for the last time.

An exceptional Adventure

Within this nearly 2 hours visiting the Skocjan Caves, passing an underground world of parts named Paradise, Giant, Pans, Rock Face, Collapse Hall etc. presenting all their astonishing and splendid appearances of nature and the special flora and fauna - remarkable too, you will be sure to have made an exceptional adventure.
