Skofja Loka - The Walled City
Skofja Loka is a perfect place to spend some days and forget about city life. Here you can calm down and enjoy some peace and quiet. The diocese city is more than thousand years old. It was proclaimed a cultural monument in 1987.
Medieval Architecture
The village is medieval in architecture and offers many hiking trails nearby.It was developed on a terrace above the Soca river and below the castle hills – a natural protection for the city.
The town reached its peak during the late gothic and rennaicance period. That’s why you’ll find here numeruous stone windows and portals, overhanging stories and picturesque arcaded courtyards.
The Castle
The ancient Skofja Loka castle rises above the city and was first mentionned in the 13th century. Today it’s home to the museum that offers a rich exhibition of the guilds that dominated here until the 19th century: shoemakers, silver makers, bakers and tailormen. These were also the most powerful guilds in the Freising archdiocese and therefore survived the longest. By the way, the name Škofja Loka translates to Bishop’s Meadow or Lawn.
Mestni Trg (Plac)
Below the castle hill lies mestni trg sqare (plac) with its rich architectual details and colourful facades. This place was once the residences of rich merchants. The skilled tradesmen lived in the lower and more modest "Spodnji Trg" Square or "Longtrg".

The area here is strewn with galleries, museums and churches. Many Painters and writers have come to the region for their inspiration.

Skofja Loka honeybread
Honeybread "mali kruhek" from Skofja Loka and around is a soft, honey-sweet and unleavened bread made from wheat flour or rye, honey, cinnamon, pepper, potash and cloves.
The dough was usually formed, by pressing it into special wooden, handcarved moulds.
Special tip: annual medieval days
The annual medieval days present numeruous ancient medieval music, dance and crafts. Also you can watch a tournament of knights which return Skofja Loka to the middle age. Usually on last Saturday in June.
