The most Slovenia fans will know this. For all others: Slovenia is located in Central Europe, the south part of it lies on the Balkan peninsula. More than two million people live there. Political Situation
Officially named the Republic of Slovenia after its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it became one of the youngest European countries.
Topology and Regions
The Republic of Slovenia is divided in four natural regions: The alpine landscape on the north, the prealpine hills on the east, the mediterranean landscape in the southwest, where the country is bordering the Adriatic Sea with the Golf of Trieste, and the dinaric landscape on the middle south part. The highest peak of Slovenia is Triglav with its 2864 metres. Approximately 50 % of the country is covered by forests.

Tourism
Surrounded by natural beauty of mountain ranges, rivers, and valleys, it remains a fabulous alternative to the crowds and rush attracted by other tourist sites in Europe. Tourists are attracted by the warm climate and sunny weather as it sits on the "sunny side of the Alps".
Slovenia is open to tourism since 1991. There are best conditions for winter sports, wandering, hiking, climbing, surfing, sailing and so on. It is said, Yugoslavia is the birth place of skiing. The landscape is marvellous all over of the country and ideal for
slovenia tourism.
Largest Towns
Highest frequented by tourists is the historic city centre of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. There are a lot of traces of the Habsburg regency as well as numerous gothic churches in this town. Additional you can see nice art nouveau buildings there. The largest town in east Slovenia is Maribor on Drau River with its more than 100000 inhabitants.
