Slovenia flag

Interested in the slovenia flag meaning? Then you'll find here all the information you need to get the whole picture.

introduced with slovenia's independence

The current flag of Slovenia was introduced in 1991. The Republic of Slovenia is independent ever since. The three horizontal stripes, shown, are white, blue and red in this order. There is a coat of arms on the left side, exactly between the white and the blue stripe.

The coat of arms and the stripes of the banner have a special meaning. First of all the Slovenia banner and the coat of arms stand for independence and nature.

panslawic colours

The three colours of the Slovenian flag are, in this combination, the panslavic colours. The panslawism was a movement of the 18th and 19th century. All slavs wanted to be one nation.

But all of them, apart from Russia, lived under foreign rule. That’s why Russia became an example for the other slavs. And the Flag of Russia was an idol of all Slavic nations.

golden stars adopted from the Slovenian Duchy of Celje

There are three golden stars on a blue ground on the coat of arms. They stand for Slovenian independence. The symbol of the stars is adopted from the Slovenian Duchy of Celje of the 15th century.

The duke wanted to create an own Slovenian symbol, but he didn’t obtain independence from Austro-Hungarian regency. Nowadays the Slovenians are proud on their achievement.

Triglav is also represented

The white mountains represent the Alpes. The tree pikes are a symbol of the three peaked Triglav, the highest mountain of Slovenia. Its high is 2.864 meters. Additional are there two wavy lines on the coat of arms of the Banner. These blue lines signify the two rivers, flowing into the Sea.
