Short Slovenia Football Team History

The Slovenian football team played their first ever match in 1992 and surprised everyone by qualifying for the world cup. All through the qualifying rounds of the 2002 world cup they made heads turn with their playing abilities and managing to win all of their games.

They recorded an amazing six wins and six draws unfortunately they went home from the finals pointless. Although they didn't manage to qualify for the 2006 world cup they were the only team to beat Italy and then went on to beat Russia and secure their place in the 2010 world cup.

Robert Koren

Robert Koren is a mid fielder and the captain of the Slovenia football team. In his early career he played for a Norwegian side and fast became one of their top players. In 2007 and he began playing for West Bromwich Albion signing an 18 month contract with them.

Late in 2007 a freak accident left him injured after a ball hit him in the eye, he suffered internal bleeding and temporary loss of his sight. Although he made a full recovery he missed the beginning of the 2008 season. In 2010 West Bromwich Albion decided not to renew his contract meaning he is currently on the open market.

Zlato Dedic

Zlato Dedic is another great player in the team; he is a striker and has been with the team since 2008. Although he has always been loyal to his roots and stayed close to home he has built up a great career in football.

He has been playing since 2000 and has been loaned to several big named teams but never secured a long term contract with them. Zlato Dedic was instrumental in the qualifying game against Russia as he scored the winning goal.

Milivoje Novakovic

Milivoje Novakovic is a striker for the Slovenia national team and plays for FC Köln; he began playing football in 1999. He went on to join FC Köln in 2006 for a large amount of 1.5million euros and was the top goal scorer in the 2007/2008 season.

In 2008 he was awarded the captaincy of his team and went on to 16 goals in that season. The captaincy was removed from him in 2009 by the new manager. He has impressive performances and scored a hat trick against Trinidad and Tobago securing his place in the world cup.

Samir Handanovic

Samir Handanovic is the 25 year old goal keeper for this team; he has played with them since 2004 and also plays for the Italian club Udinese. He has played for several teams in his career but has returned to his favorite Udinese and in 2007 signed a contract, which lasts until 2012.

His goalkeeping skills have helped the Slovenia team to achieve what they have in the world cup so far. With all of the tam pulling together they should achieve great things at the world cup.
