Slovenia Slovakia and Slavonia

Slovenia Slovakia and Slavonia - are there any differences?
Yes, there are but understanding exactly how they differ is not helped at all by the fact that the Slovakian name for Slovakia is Slovenska Republika! Are you with me so far?

If so, maybe you could give the mail delivery service some much needed assistance in this department!

<

Slovania is a spelling error

The problem is not eased when "Slovania, Slovenien, Slovinia, Solvenia or Slovenja" come into the equation. Unlike the other three, which are all parts of Europe, the other five doesn't actually exist; they are merely spelling errors.

Slovenia Slovakia - a real problem for mail delivery

So if you have mail to post and you want it to safely reach its destination, that destination being the country known as Slovenia on the sunny side of the Alps this article will provide you with all you need to know.

Slovenia - Where is it?

Let's take a look on a Slovenia Map. Surrounded by Austria on the north, Hungary on the north east, Croatia on the south and south east and Italy and the Adriatic Sea on the west, Slovenia is a European country covering an area of 20,253 square kilometers or 7,820 square miles.

To help you make a comparison, the country with its 46.6 kilometers (29 miles) long coastline is slightly smaller than New Jersey.

Facts About Slovenia

The natives of Slovenia are called Slovenes. The South Slavic ethnic group makes up for around 88% of the population of the Republic, with ethnic Croats and Serbs and other ethnic groups constituting 3, 2 and 7% respectively.

The culture of Slovenia has been influenced strongly by Austria and Germany as well as other nationalities included in the ethnic breakdown above. There is lots of useful information on this site about the culture of Slovenia and its language.

Slovakia - Where is it?

Slovakia or the Slovak Republic is located in the east of Central Europe. It's a landlocked nation which has the River Danube as its access to the Black Sea. With a total area of 48,845 square kilometers (in miles that's 18,859sq) it's surrounded by the Czech Republic on the north west, Poland on the north, Ukraine on the east, Hungary on the south and lastly, Austria on the west.

Striking mountains not dissimilar to the Rockies in America make up much of its northern and central terrain whilst in the south and west you will find plains and rolling hills. Again, making a comparison Slovakia is the size of South Carolina with its capital, Bratislava situated close to the western border, only a short distance from Vienna, Austria

Facts About Slovakia

The population of Slovakia is made up of many ethnic groups with roughly 85.7% being Slovak and 10.6% being ethnic Hungarians. There are also a small number of Czechs, Moravians, Poles Ruthenians, Silesians and Ukrainians living here as well as an official 1.6% of Romany Gypsies although the experts would tell us that the true percentage of Romany folk living in Slovakia is considerably higher than this.

The official language is Slovak which around five million people speak but there are quite a few who speak Hungarian and Czech too.

Slavonia - Where is it?

Often confused with the close-by country of Slovenia, Slavonia is not actually a country - it's one of eastern Croatia's geographical and historical regions. Bounded by the rivers Drava, Sava and Danube in the north, south and east respectively this fertile agricultural forested lowland is home to Slavonians who speak the language, Slavonic.
