Slovenia Travel Tips

Find here some important slovenia travel tips.
Did you know that Slovenia has introduced on July 1 2008 a road tolling system based on a "vignette" sticker for motorway travel? This system is replacing the previous slovenian toll barrier system.

From July on to drive on motorways and expressways in Slovenia, every vehicle with a maximum permissible weight of 3,500 kg must have a vignette – compulsory!

Slovenia Travel

Vignette only for six month or annual available

A six month vignette costs you €35, while an annual vignette costs €55. Unfortunately there are no plans for the moment to introduce a vignette valid for shorter periods. This makes a weekend trip to Slovenia not really cheap...

The vignette can be bought at DARS offices and petrol stations in Slovenia, and also in countries bordering with Slovenia like Italy, Austria or Hungary.

By the way, the vignette has also to be bought if you wish to use the slovenian motorways only as transit to reach Croatia. By this measurement Slovenia hopes to reduce the high amount of transit travellers trough Slovenia.

on the spot fine up to 300 Euro

You should know, that police is monitoring closely the motorway use, and stops motorists without Vignettes. If you fail to display a Vignette this leads to an on-the-spot fine of up to €300.

Winter Equipment compulsory

During the winter time between 15 November until 15 March, you should know that winter equipment is compulsory in Slovenia. In other words your car must be equipped with one of the following "winter features":
- winter tyres,
- radial tyres (at least 4mm tread depth) and snow chains.

If your vehicle doesn’t display this equipment this might cause a fine of 115 Euro, and if you cause a delay on the road for this reason 415 Euro have to be paid.

Dimmed Headlights on at all times

Most Slovenia Travellers know this already, but even we forget it from time to time. While driving in Slovenia, you must have your dimmed headlights on at all times, by law. In the vehicle you are also required to carry a warning triangle, a reflective jacket and a first aid kit.

Speed Limits

Speed limits are 130km/h (80mph) on special motorways, 100km/h (62mph) on roads for motor traffic, 90 km/h (56mph) on roads outside residential spots and 50km/h (31mph) in cities. You are not allowed to overtake School buses. Fasten your Seat belts (compulsory, including in the back, if provided).

Heavy on-the-spot fines for traffic offences

Special Tip: The Slovenian police has the legal right to charge on-the-spot fines for the following delicts:
- driving under alcohol influence,
- high speed,
- jaywalking
- utilizing mobile phones without wireless headsets (bluetooth).
