Slovenian Education System

The Slovene school system has undergone some massive changes in the past ten years, and there is a strong indication that education has become a national priority.
Elementary Slovenian Education
There is a nine year program for all children, and children begin attending at the age of six. In Slovenia, the class size is fairly small, with an average about one teacher for every twelve students and about twenty students in each class.
This nine-year program is divided up into three groups of three years apiece, and after this requirement has been fulfilled, almost all of the students will then proceed to secondary school.
Secondary Education
Secondary school usually lasts for three years, and these schools are divided up into vocational, technical or general secondary programs. Each of these respective programs is meant to prepare the student for the work that he or she will do after secondary school.
The general program is divided into a "general" education and one that is more geared towards professional careers in the arts or academic fields.
University System
About 84 percent of students who complete secondary education will go on to tertiary levels of education, and with the improvements involve in the school system, this number is in the rise.
Education in Slovenia is financed by the state budget and the amount of money that is allotted to educational programs has risen from 4.76 percent of the gross domestic product to 6 percent in recent years.
Children of foreign nationals have found that the Slovene school system to be more than adequate for their needs, whether they choose to make their home in Slovenia or whether they choose to go abroad to pursue higher education in other countries.
Universities
There are four universities in Slovenia, each one with its own specialties and strengths.
The newest of these is the University of Nova Gorcia, which was established in 200 and boasts five faculties and colleges.
Only three years older, the University of Primorska also has five colleges and faculties, while the University of Maribor, which has been around for more than thirty years, has fifteen colleges available.
The largest university is the University of Ljubjana, which as 20 colleges, three art academies and three other professional colleges.
Options and Costs
One of the most positive things about the Slovenian education system is that there is no charge for state-approved undergraduate study programs; for full time studies, they are offered free of charge as a public service.
For students who are interested in studying part-time, there are a number of scholarships an grants available. In adition, you'll also find that there are no less than seven private institutions of higher education, and more than forty vocational colleges.
