Slovenian Names and Ancestors

How to Trace Your Slovenian Relatives and Ancestors

Do you want to know more about slovenian names? Maybe you have a slovenian surname and want to trace your ancestors?

There is quite a good chance that you have Slovenian ancestors as during the first half of the 20th century around a quarter of the population emigrated leaving only one and a half million inhabitants in situ.

Of the 500,000 emigrants, approximately 250,000 of them moved to the USA with 40,000, 30,000 and 25,000 setting up homes in Canada, Argentina and Australia respectively.

Many of these folk lost touch with their old country relatives and made families in their newfound homelands. You could be related to one of these Slovenians and if their past and your heritage is of interest to you it's possible you may want to be in contact with them to find out more.

So How Do You Go About It?

The first port of call is to check out the births, deaths and marriages registered in Slovenia. As the first civil records of marriages were not kept until 1946 in what was formerly known as the People's Republic of Slovenia, parish registers are a good place to look for your relatives.

Here you will find all manner of information about recorded baptisms, deaths and weddings. Up until around the 1920´s the information kept by the Slovene parishes was gathered together by the Archdiocesan Archives located in Ljubljana.

Tracing slovenian names and ancestors
between 1809 and 1813

Going further back still civil registers between 1809 and 1813 were kept by the National Archives of the Republic of Slovenia. At this time, Slovenia was part of the Illyrian Provinces belonging to Napoleon´s French Empire.

Here you will also find the registers for the large part of western Slovenia belonging to Italy from 1924 to 1945, known formerly as the Julian March. These archives also hold the registers created in German occupied territories between 1941 and 1945.

Many of the civil registers created later than 1946 can be found in the original offices were the registration took place.

Do you need to go further back than this to trace your ancestors?

If you are looking for slovenian names and people who lived in Slovenia prior to 1850 and you are having no luck with your search in the parish registers, the land registers may prove to be a good information source.

The basic information you need to trace your Slovenian relatives is their full name and date of birth. People who live in Slovenia don't tend to move around much so if you know where they lived, you may be able to find out about them more quickly from one of their descendants. Something as simple as the telephone directory often turns out to be a useful tool at this point in your search.

Slovene Genealogy

If you would like more information about tracing your Slovenian relatives, take a look at the Slovene Genealogical Society's website which can be translated into English and German.

You will be able to find out where people with the same slovenian names as your ancestors live which will hopefully help you with your venture.
