Slovenian News, Media
and some history

Find below even more informations on slovenian news and media options available to you, but first of all let's take a brief look at how they got where they are today.

Magnificient Development of Broadcasting Market

The early nineteen nineties saw the independence of Slovenia from Yugoslavia and at this time the economic success of the country became apparent and its broadcasting market developed magnificently.

Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia
ensures freedom of the press

Freedom of the press and many other forms of public expression and communication are ensured by the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia and since June 2001 certain rules and regulations of the Act on Media serve as the basis of the whole media sphere.

Supported by the advertisements placed in the newspapers, the majority of them are privately owned.

private and public ownership

As far as broadcasting goes, it's a mixed sector of private and public ownership. RTV Slovenia, the public service, and private stations such as Pop TV and Kanal share the television market, although approximately 66% of Slovenian homes have satellite or cable TV. There are numerous public and commercial radio stations too.

in the last ten years momentum was gained

Although the media development of Slovenia since the time of independence can be compared to those in other countries of Central Europe it does have quite a few differences, diversity and variety being two of them.

During the 19th century when it all started, daily newspapers and periodicals were published in abundance and in the last ten years of the 20th century momentum was gained, resulting in media sector privatization due to the market economy.

RTV Slovenija

RTV Slovenija is a public broadcaster operating two national television channels as well as some regional services. Pop TV and Kanal A are both commercial channels.

RTV Slovenia also operate national radio stations, namely, A1, Val 202 and Ars as well as regional services and a station with tourists in mind where English and German are the spoken languages.

Radio Hit and Radio City are the commercial radio options.

popular Internet websites for Slovenian News
