Slovenj Gradec

Slovenj Gradec is your next port of call, if you are looking to experience a town that retains an impressive element of old-world charm even as it competes with more well-known towns of equal size.

Back to the days of the Romans

Located at the meeting of the Suhodolnica and Mislinja rivers, it has a history that extends back to the days of the Romans.

Though the first mention of the name Slovenj Gradec was found during the tenth century, the history of the town and its reputation as a beautiful place, were already well-founded.

History

It would be hard to find a town as culturally rich as Slovenj Gradec. It was founded by the Counts of Andechs, and it has always been a center of commerce and crafts.

When it became recognized as a city, it was given rights to fair privileges, a court, creating its own mint, and even building a wall to protect it and to distinguish it from humbler settlements. With a history that goes back more than a thousand years, there is a great deal to be said for its importance in the region.

The Old City Core

When you want to see what life might have looked like for people who long ago treaded through those same city streets, be sure to consider the old city core of the original settlement.

The original outline of the town has been preserved, and within this outline, you will find important locales such as the Koroska Regional Museum, the Koroska Art Gallery and the house where the famous composer Hugo Wolf was born.

Within its confines, you will also find the Church of Sv Elizabeta and the Church of Sv. Duh.

Urban importance

The history of this city is one that you can find in the most unlikely places. In keeping with its reputation as an important representative of the way that cities were once put together, you will find that traces of the walled medieval city that it was can still be seen along Ozka, Cankarjeva and Meskova streets.

Culture

When you are looking to see what Slovenj Gradec has to offer on the museum front, you will not be disappointed. In this one town, you will find that you can visit the Carinthian Gallery of fine arts, the Carinthian Regional Museum, as well as the Memorial Room in Graska Gora.

If you really want to grasp the history of the area and the significance of the city to the times that it existed in, these places are well worth a visit.

This city will surprise you

If you are considering visiting the area, make sure that you make Slovenj Gradec one of your stopping points; there are plenty of reasons to do so, and you may find yourself quite surprised by what you find!
