Where is Slovenia?

Travel to Slovenia - Central or Eastern Europe?

"Where is Slovenia?" - This is a question a lot of people are asking in Google's search engine. Find here not only some insights regarding the geographical position but also some important apects connected with Slovenia's history.

Commonly referred to as Central European, Slovenia may less often be referred to as South-eastern European because it belonged to former Yugoslavia until 1991

Part of Yugoslavia in the past

As just mentioned, Slovenia was formerly part of Yugoslavia located just a nick away from Italy's top eastern side. It boasts an interesting history of being part of Italy, Germany, Hungary, France, and Austria-Hungary.

Subjugated and colonized by many different cultures

It was besieged by the Turkish, subjugated by Magyars and then Germans, swallowed up by the Franks and settled in by Southern Slavs migrating from the Baltic Sea.

It was later conquered by Ostrogoths and then Langobards and then razed by Huns. Rome came in and did their part in colonizing Slovenia after the Celts, the Illyrians and prehistoric man.

not bigger than New Jersey

All that and it's no bigger than New Jersey! However, it is full of big things. It has towering Alps, picturesque beaches, mighty rivers and a massive system of underground caves, not to mention a huge karst plain known to house an enormous "disappearing" lake.

Where is Slovenia?
The Geographical Position

And here the answer to your question: Where is Slovenia?
Slovenia is located at the crossroads of the Alpine, Mediterranean and Pannonian cultures which is the perfect basis for a rich and exceptionally varied diverseness.

Its neighbors are Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy and it spans an area of 20,273 km2 almost half of which is forest land.

The census of 2006 revealed that Slovenia has a population of 2,010,347. It could be said that it's almost a mini continent due to its diverse temperature, humidity, wind, soil configuration and many other natural sources.

Historical Influence

As far as the history of Slovenia is concerned the present day people's ancestors lived in the area as far back as the 6th century.

As mentioned earlier, there have been many tumultuous historical events which have taken place in the years between then and now, the most dominant of all being the times of the Roman Empire, the Venetian Republic, the Austro Hungarian Monarchy and, of course, the Former Yugoslavia which undoubtedly had the most impact on Slovenia until 1991 when the country won its independence.

Slovenia is part of the EU

The admission of Slovenia to the EU is probably the most significant event to mark the recent history of the country. This has had a positive effect on the country's cuisine.

It's been opened up and influenced and become more and more popular amongst the other EU members as a result of its preserved state and high level of awareness.

Slovene Cuisine: Naturalness and authenticity

They key features of Slovene cuisine are naturalness and authenticity. For example hard boiled corn mush, polenta, potice (which is a kind of pastry), Kranj sausauges, flat round cakes known as pogace, Kras prosciutto and the Slovene style ravioli known as zlikrofi are just some of the gastromic delights you are likely to come across in this part of the world.

Special cultural forms and styles of life have come about as a result of social and historical events and developments connected to the geographical position of Slovenia.

As would be expected, this has had a positive effect on the cuisine here, for example old recipes with new influences using home grown produce without much industrial input are enjoyed by many.
